Man, I am still not going to write the five thousand word essay that I’m itching to write because I’ve learned my lesson from previous fandoms, but maybe one day, I will understand why people get so bent around the axle about ships. As far as I’m concerned, they’re just…any character dynamic that’s compelling and fun to explore in different contexts or interpretations? It doesn’t have to mean anything? It doesn’t necessarily have any relationship to what we want to see in canon? We can explore different, mutually exclusive interpretations of the same relationship, and it doesn’t have to say anything about our thoughts on anything? I totally get having some that we find annoying or unpleasant in any number of ways, but damn, I did not understand getting this wound up about it when I was first getting started in fanfiction, and I certainly don’t sixteen years later.
